Finding a Home with an In-Law Suite

Of the 3,891 homes listed for sale in the Greater Savannah area, 60 are described as having an in-law suite. I’ve had several customers request homes with in-law suites lately, and why not? Even if you don’t have a parent who’s elderly or has health problems now, you might one day, right? In the mean time, it’s a great place for out-of-town guests or teenagers to crash and stay out of your hair.
What Type of In-Law Suite is Right for You?
There are lots of different types of in-law suites out there. Some rooms that are classified as in-law suites are simply rooms inside the main house with a full bath attached. Others have kitchens, living rooms and separate entrances. Some are not even accessible from inside the house. It all depends on how much breathing space and privacy you and your in-law or parent need. Don’t forget to consider other options, like wheelchair accessibility, a place to park an RV or an intercom system.
Another type of living space commonly described as an in-law suite on the Savannah Multilist is a bonus room or apartment over a garage. I don’t believe this type of living space should be classified as an in-law suite, because most mature adults don’t relish the idea of climbing a set of stairs to get to their living quarters. This type of space is perfect for a rental space, teen living quarters or guest suite, but I think they should be discounted as in-law suites unless they happen to have elevators.
The Proximity They Need and the Privacy You Both Crave
Today I took two clients and their parents to view three homes with in-law suites. The favorite of the parents was a home with an 1100 square foot attached in-law suite with a living room, kitchen, bedroom, full bath and separate entrance. It even had its own private backyard due to the compartmentalized privacy fence. It was the perfect blend of privacy and proximity.
