Art in Savannah

Today was a gorgeous day for Super Museum Sunday. Savannah area museums offered free admission for the hundreds of people who turned out to enjoy the arts. My husband Rob and I were among them, and we had a great time. We visited the Jepson Center for the Arts, the Telfair Museum and the Owens-Thomas House. Part of the fun was walking from museum to museum. The weather was perfect, everyone was out walking through the squares, and some of the trees have even begun to flower. The sound of laughter floating through the air was invigorating.
We were drawn to the lovely Star Magnolia in the Owens-Thomas House garden. The garden is an oasis of hidden beauty in downtown Savannah. The Owens-Thomas House was designed by famous architect William Jay in 1819. Expect unusual features like rounded rooms and doors, as well as a fabulous amber-colored wall skylight and an inventive cooling system. Our favorite of the three museums was the Jepson Center for the Arts (below, left). The building itself is a work of art, and the exhibits were beautiful, thought-provoking and - in the case of the Oliphant cartoons - funny. Telfair Museum (below, right).
