7 Things to Do When You're Moving

Posted by Rebecca Tue, 28 Oct 2008 14:00:00 GMT

1. Change your address. Visit https://moversguide.usps.com. Don’t forget to notify credit card holders, subscription services and anyone else you’d like to make aware of your new location.

2. Contact utility companies:

  • GA Power 1-888-660-5890
  • Atlanta Gas Light 1-877-427-4321
  • Comcast  comcast.com (get this one done early if you rely on home internet for your business needs - it often takes several days to get an appointment)
  • Water: (912) 651-6460
  • Trash Collection (inside Savannacity limits) (912) 651-6582
  • If you live in Newport, Lake Shore or Rice Creek, visit the City of Port Wentworth web site for all information

3. Know where the main circuit breaker in your new house is, as well as water shut-off valves.

4. Get your locks changed. If you’re buying a new home from us, you won’t have to worrry about this step. We have special construction locks. As soon as you put your key in our lock, it toggles a switch on the inside and only your key will be able to open it from that point on. You’ll want to do this to every outside door on your house.

5. Update your driver’s license, car registration and voter registration.

6. Apply for the Homestead Exemption. Port Wentworth residents, print out the form here and take it to city hall at 305 S Coastal Hwy. Savannah residents, take a valid driver’s license with your new home’s address on it and a utility bill with your name on it to the Chatham County Courthouse.

7. Get a termite bond! The question in coastal Georgia is not if you’ll get termites, but when. Make sure you’re protected and that you prevent future problems. A termite inspector will come out to your home and give you a free quote. If you buy with us, we take care of that for your first year. Just make sure to renew with Yates-Astro before it expires at the end of your first year in your new home.
