Tortuga's Island Grille - Breakfast in Savannah

Posted by Rebecca Mon, 02 Nov 2009 19:11:00 GMT

We tried Tortuga’s Island Grille in Thunderbolt with some friends this weekend and were impressed. The inside lacks ambiance, but if you want somewhere to sit outside on a warm, sunny day, the little patio tables with umbrellas are perfect! Although you can’t see the river from the patio due to the new too-tall condos, it’s directly accross the street.

The food was fantastic. I ordered the Fish and Eggs plate, complete with fresh, local fish, eggs any way you like them, grits, maduros and a biscuit. Maduros are sweet plantains (similar to bananas) that are sort of pan-seared and caramelized. I would go back just for the maduros. The other dishes looked great too. It was a little pricey for breakfast $8-12 per plate, but my husband and I agreed that the dishes were large enough that we could have split something if we wanted. We had our Doberman, Achilles, with us and he got lots of loving and attention and his own water bowl.

Dog-Friendly Beach Near Savannah

Posted by Rebecca Fri, 30 Oct 2009 19:43:00 GMT

Looking for a dog-friendly beach in the Savannah area? Unfortunately, Tybee Island’s beaches are not pet-friendly, but Hilton Head’s beaches (about 45 minutes from most Savannah area locations) certainly are, and they even allow your pup to do some off-leash romping.

Last Sunday, my husband and I took our Doberman, Achilles, to Mitchelville Beach and had a blast. The picture is of Achilles frolicking in the surf, which he didn’t get tired of for at least an hour. The beach is gorgeous and the shoreline is mostly untouched, so you can expect lots of natural beauty and plenty of room for your pet to run and play. The only people there were us and maybe two other couples despite the warm, sunny October weather. Ameneties for Mitchelville Beach Park include free parking, outdoor shower and restrooms.

Keep reading for off-leash hours and a map of Hilton Head beaches.

A Sunny Day in Forsyth Park, Savannah

Posted by Rebecca Mon, 17 Aug 2009 12:14:00 GMT

It was a gorgeous, sunny day, so my husband and I headed to Savannah’s Historic District for a great brunch at J. Christopher’s on Liberty Street. Our Doberman, Achilles accompanied us, so we chose an outdoor table. We ordered shrimp and grits and the Goldie-Lox dish (lox and bagles with capers. yum!). Achilles was served a bowl of ice water and the Puppy Chow dish, which had all kinds of breakfast foods, including eggs and maybe sausage - needless to say, our dog was a happy boy.

After our fantastic brunch, we headed to Forsyth Park to get some exercise and give Achilles a little running time. Here is some video footage of the park and of Achilles playing fetch:
