Buyer Representation

Posted by Rebecca Tue, 01 Aug 2006 14:25:00 GMT

Whether you’re a first time homebuyer, an investor or somewhere in between, you need to have someone to represent you. By that, I mean someone who has your best interest in mind, and who is out to find you the best home at the best price for you.

Most people don’t realize how important it is to have buyer’s agency (fancy words for an agent hired by a buyer to work for him or her). They also don’t realize that it’s almost always free… (sound good? keep reading)

The Hazards of Homebuying

Posted by Rebecca Tue, 25 Jul 2006 20:47:00 GMT

Let’s talk about some environmental issues that can greatly affect you, whether you are buying or selling a home. I know. I know. This is the south. We usually leave “environmental” stuff to hummus-eating hippies in Birkenstocks, but hear me out.

The Issues:

  1. Meth Labs - Meth is an illegal drug made of toxic household chemicals in hidden labs. These labs are usually in houses, apartments, condos, sheds, etc. Meth is the fastest growing illegal drug in Georgia. This means that meth labs, and homes that were at one time meth labs, could be in your communities.

Fair Housing Law

Posted by Rebecca Mon, 24 Jul 2006 23:13:00 GMT

The Fair Housing Law covers some important information that you as a buyer or seller need to know. What should you do if you feel discriminated against? What kinds of questions can your real estate agent not legally answer for you? Who is protected under this law? You might be surprised at the answers. Discrimination can happen even here in Savannah, so if you want to consider yourself an informed home buyer or seller, be sure to read on. Don’t worry. This is just a quick overview; not a long, boring recitation of the law…

Educated Realtors

Posted by Rebecca Mon, 24 Jul 2006 19:23:00 GMT

This week I’m attending a continuing education real estate school called GRI (Graduate Realtor® Institute). Attending continuing education classes each year is required of all Realtors® in order to maintain their Georgia Real Estate licenses. There are many classes to choose from throughout the year, but this particular school earns the agent the GRI designation (after 1 week-long class every year for 3 years, each followed by a passed exam). The GRI designation will accompany the Realtor’s® name on his or her business cards and all advertisements.

What Does This Mean for You as a Buyer or Seller?

First of all, for the education requirements to apply, your real estate agent must be a Realtor®. Check out this page on Realtor.com for a more in-depth explanation of what a Realtor® is.

Sure, the designation next to an agent’s name makes her feel cool, but what does it do for you? It assures you that your Realtor® has learned about the Code of Ethics, Fair Housing Laws, Environmental Issues that affect real estate, and that she knows the ins and outs of the contracts you will be signing your name to.

For the rest of this week, I will be posting things that I have learned in class that apply to you. If you’re interested in becoming an educated buyer or seller, read on.
