Tortuga's Island Grille - Breakfast in Savannah

Posted by Rebecca Mon, 02 Nov 2009 19:11:00 GMT

We tried Tortuga’s Island Grille in Thunderbolt with some friends this weekend and were impressed. The inside lacks ambiance, but if you want somewhere to sit outside on a warm, sunny day, the little patio tables with umbrellas are perfect! Although you can’t see the river from the patio due to the new too-tall condos, it’s directly accross the street.

The food was fantastic. I ordered the Fish and Eggs plate, complete with fresh, local fish, eggs any way you like them, grits, maduros and a biscuit. Maduros are sweet plantains (similar to bananas) that are sort of pan-seared and caramelized. I would go back just for the maduros. The other dishes looked great too. It was a little pricey for breakfast $8-12 per plate, but my husband and I agreed that the dishes were large enough that we could have split something if we wanted. We had our Doberman, Achilles, with us and he got lots of loving and attention and his own water bowl.

Lofts on Broughton Grand Opening

Posted by Rebecca Sun, 17 Feb 2008 16:49:00 GMT

This weekend was the Grand Opening of the Lofts on Broughton Street in downtown Savannah. My husband and I went, taking along three friends of ours. What a great turnout! While we were there, there was a steady stream of people coming and going, and there were at least 100 people there at all times. The event was catered by Locos, with entertainment by Trae Girley and a great artwork display by Penelope Miller.

Several completed lofts were open for touring, while the main event - the cocktail party - was held in a giant unfinished corner space with exposed beams, brick walls and a great view of Broughton Street.

Art in Savannah

Posted by Rebecca Sun, 10 Feb 2008 21:18:00 GMT

Today was a gorgeous day for Super Museum Sunday. Savannah area museums offered free admission for the hundreds of people who turned out to enjoy the arts. My husband Rob and I were among them, and we had a great time. We visited the Jepson Center for the Arts, the Telfair Museum and the Owens-Thomas House. Part of the fun was walking from museum to museum. The weather was perfect, everyone was out walking through the squares, and some of the trees have even begun to flower. The sound of laughter floating through the air was invigorating.

Savannah's St. Patrick's Day Parade Date Change

Posted by Rebecca Sat, 09 Feb 2008 19:31:00 GMT

Mark your calendars. 2008’s famous St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Savannah will be on Friday, March 14th instead of the 17th. The date shift is to avoid a conflict with Holy Week, since Easter is on March 23rd this year.

Our city’s favorite celebration draws a crowd of around 300,000 each year. Unless you plan on being pinched thousands of times, be sure and take your fashion cues from the cutie on the right.

Check out what the AJC has to say on the subject.

Finding a Home with an In-Law Suite

Posted by Rebecca Sat, 09 Feb 2008 17:43:00 GMT

Of the 3,891 homes listed for sale in the Greater Savannah area, 60 are described as having an in-law suite. I’ve had several customers request homes with in-law suites lately, and why not? Even if you don’t have a parent who’s elderly or has health problems now, you might one day, right? In the mean time, it’s a great place for out-of-town guests or teenagers to crash and stay out of your hair.

Free Museum Admission Sunday

Posted by Rebecca Fri, 08 Feb 2008 22:55:00 GMT

Super Museum Sunday is Feb. 10, 2008. From 12:00-4:00 p.m. you’ll get free admission to Savannah area museums, including the Jepson Center for the Arts, the Roundhouse, the Mighty Eighth and some great house museums like the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace and the Owens-Thomas House. This is a great event for locals and visitors alike. I, for one, can’t wait! There are several area museums that I haven’t visited yet, but that will change this Sunday. Check back here for photos and a play-by-play of my Super Museum Sunday. For a list of participating museums, visit www.georgiahistory.com. Don’t forget to visit Oatland Island while you’re at it, and see some great animals. See you there!

Daniel Lets Us Follow Along As He Buys His First Home, Part II

Posted by Rebecca Thu, 14 Jun 2007 15:27:00 GMT

We’re rejoining my brother-in-law Daniel as he buys his first home. If you didn’t read Part I yet, you’ll want to do that now.

He’s already

  1. Decided on the type of home he wanted
  2. Found the particular home he wanted to purchase

We’ll pick up here with the third step in the home buying process:

3. Find a great mortgage lender.

If you don’t know any mortgage lenders that you’d like to work with, your Realtor will be able to give you several reputable names. You need to find a lender that you feel comfortable with, whose company can offer the best loan programs to meet your needs and who will go the extra mile to stay on top of your paperwork and get you to closing smoothly and with no stress on your part. Your lender should never talk down to you and should be ready to explain the loan process in easy-to-follow terms.

I gave Daniel the names and numbers of three local lenders whom I have worked with and know to be trustworthy.
